A Journey of Resilience & Strength: A Camp Good Days Camper's Story

As I sit on my deck, enjoying the beautiful summer we've had so far, my thoughts turn to the incredible experiences and programs at Camp Good Days. This summer has been filled with moments that remind me why this camp is so special, especially when I get to spend time with our campers. During our D.A.W.G. (Doing A World of Good) program this past week, we were visited by one of our long-time campers, Lucas L., who has shown remarkable strength and resilience throughout his life.
Lucas, who was diagnosed with leukemia at the young age of eight, has faced more challenges than most of us could ever imagine. His initial diagnosis was challenging, but he'll always say it was nothing compared to the battle he faced when he relapsed on his 14th birthday. He underwent a stem cell transplant in New York City, becoming the first child to receive such a treatment. The journey was grueling, with the first transplant failing to take hold, necessitating a second attempt that, thankfully, succeeded. This paved the way for a bone marrow transplant in Buffalo, NY, where his sister bravely stepped in as his donor. Despite the success, he endured the painful aftermath of graft versus host disease, which took two years of recovery.
Lucas is now twenty years old and, after six years of being cancer-free, was recently diagnosed with a skin and bone tumor. The tumor, shockingly the size of four softballs, has necessitated extensive surgery with the possibility of the removal of his right leg. This 20-hour procedure, followed by three months in the hospital and up to two years of recovery, would test anyone's spirit. Yet, in our conversation, he wasn't bitter or upset. He exemplified a resilience and grace that left me in awe.
Lucas's story is a powerful reminder of the battles our campers face and the incredible strength they show. While many of us at Camp Good Days were excited about the 'Let's Sing Taylor' band coming to perform at camp, a generous gift from the band and one of our long-time supporters, my mind was on this young hero. The band's performance was a highlight of the summer, bringing joy to campers, volunteers, and families alike. Watching the younger campers sing along to every word, I realized how special this moment was. Yet, the thought of what Lucas was facing overshadowed the celebration for me.
In my years with Camp Good Days, I've had the privilege of meeting some of the most influential people in politics and sports. However, when asked who I admire the most, my answer is always the same: our campers. They are the true heroes. Their courage and positivity in the face of unimaginable adversity inspire me daily.
As we move forward into the upcoming days, I ask you all to keep this brave young man in your thoughts and prayers. Pray for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery, and pray for the doctors and nurses who will be working tirelessly to help him get through this critical time.
Lucas's journey is a testament to the kind of incredible kids we serve at Camp Good Days. His story is a reminder of why we do what we do. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be a part of his life and the lives of so many amazing young people at Camp Good Days.
