CAMP DIRECTOR
Description
Camp Good Days is seeking a full-time, year-round Camp Director to join our leadership team to help further our mission to improve the quality of life for children and families impacted by cancer or sickle cell anemia through summer camping and year-round programming. The Camp Director will plan and deliver our camping programs, including those held at our recreational facility in Branchport, NY. During the summer months (June-August), the Camp Director will reside at our recreational facility to oversee day-to-day operations and implementation of programming. Outside of the summer months (September-May), the Camp Director will report to the Headquarters office in Mendon, NY, to maintain camper relations and facilitate year-round programming. The Camp Director reports to the Executive Director.
Essential Functions:
- Oversee and maintain ACA standards, Gold Ribbon Standards as defined by COCA (Children’s Oncology Camping Association) and child abuse prevention best practices in all associated program areas. Support efforts for Camp to meet insurance and state health requirements.
- Prepare and manage the annual budget in areas of responsibility
- Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current on best practices in camp management and working with our Camp’s population.
- Development and dissemination of policies (Visitor policy, camper behavior/ violence policy, etc) and procedures (I.e., safety plans, parent communication plans, contagious disease outbreak plans, etc.)
- Outreach to potential Rochester area-based Campers to build and maintain relationships.
- Manage Rochester-area registrations and maintain camper information database.
- Development of parent informational packets and work with regional offices to distribute
- Review and registration of Rochester-area overnight and day campers
- Plan and manage Rochester day camp program, including registration of Campers. Work closely with Volunteer Manager for camp counselors to support program.
- Assist in planning any travel trips with Program Director
- Lead and inspire collective dialogue, education, and action to support the implementation of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategies.
- Foster a team environment while working closely with the Assistant Camp Director and Volunteer Manager
- Assist with year-round events, as needed
Key Summer Duties
- Manage and oversee all day-to-day summer overnight program operations
- Manage the operation of the overnight camp facility including oversight of food services, Medical Director/ Infirmary, maintenance staff and security
- Manage summer overnight camp program schedule. Work closely with Program Director to facilitate schedule and incorporate changes.
- Be point of contact on property for vendors and visitors
- Work closely with Assistant Camp Director to communicate program needs to prepare and reset for each session
- Maintain current list of all participants, volunteers, and staff on property and their assigned locations (Cabin List)
- Act as a point of contact for camper families
- Proactively identify and respond to challenges or questions related to a camper’s experience in an appropriate and timely manner
- Provide support and coordinate facility needs for specialty camps and weekend retreats
- Help create an environment where children feel they are safe physically, mentally, and emotionally
- Work closely with Rochester office staff to troubleshoot or answer questions while camp is in session
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Education, Social Work or related field
- 3+ years' experience in camp or educational leadership or administration, including staff management
- Previous experience interviewing, hiring and supervising staff
- Prefer individuals with Camp or Youth group experience in a supervisory or management role and very familiar with outdoor activities
- Must be comfortable with high levels of interactions with children, parents and volunteers
- Must meet qualifications for NYS Children’s Camp Director
- Certification requirements: must be able to obtain and become certified in CPR/First Aid, AED
- Excellent written and verbal skills and the ability to articulate complex ideas succinctly or In depth as the situation demands
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Docs
- Consistent, self-directed, well-organized, flexible, personable and able to maintain composure in a changing environment
- Knowledge of ACA guidelines is a plus
- Must be able to work long days
- Must be able to live on-site June-August
- Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
- Must have a valid driver’s license
